What we like

  • Rotating bonus categories: The rotating bonus categories provide something for everyone to maximize cash back earnings. If you don’t like one quarter’s categories, odds are something in the following quarters will suit your spending.

What we don’t like

  • Must activate bonus categories: The only way to earn the 5% cash back is to activate the bonus categories each quarter. This may be an issue for forgetful people, therefore set a reminder so you don’t miss out.

Who should consider this card

People who are looking to maximize cash back with a variety of rotating bonus categories will benefit from Chase Freedom® — just remember to activate the bonus categories each quarter.

Rewards breakdown

With Chase Freedom® you earn 5% cash back on up to $1,500 in combined purchases in bonus categories each quarter you activate. Enjoy new 5% categories every 3 months. Unlimited 1% cash back on all other purchases. From April – June 2020, bonus categories are Grocery Stores, Fitness Club & Gym Memberships & Select Streaming Services. Be sure to check which stores are participating.

Chase offers a better balance transfer card with Chase Slate®*, offering the same 0% Intro APR on Balance Transfers for 15 months (16.74% - 25.49% Variable APR after), but a standout Intro $0 on transfers made within 60 days of account opening. After that: Either $5 or 5%, whichever is greater. Note that the Chase Slate® doesn’t have a rewards program, so that’s something to consider.

What we like

  • 25% more in travel redemption: When you redeem your points for travel with Chase Ultimate Rewards®, points are worth 25% more. That means 1 point equals $.0125; instead of the $.01 from other redemption options.
  • No foreign transaction fees: This is a must have feature for any travel card since you can spend outside the U.S. without the typical 2-5% fee some other cards charge.
  • 24/7 customer service: No matter where you are in the world, customer service specialists are available to assist you with any questions that may arise.
  • Travel coverage: You can benefit from a wide array of travel protections including trip cancellation/interruption service, auto rental collision damage waiver, baggage delay insurance, trip delay reimbursement, and travel and emergency assistance services.

What we don’t like

  • Low rewards rate for everyday spending: Unfortunately, the higher rewards rate is only for travel and dining purchases, so spending outside those categories will earn a low rewards rate. You can find travel cards that offer a high flat-rate on all spending.
  • Annual fee: $95. Although this is on the low side for an annual fee, you can find cards that don’t charge you to be a cardholder.

Who should consider this card

Credit JourneySM

A key feature of all Chase cards is Credit JourneySM where you can view your credit score for free, updated weekly. Checking your score doesn’t affect your credit and promotes good credit behavior. Signing up will also automatically enroll you in credit alerts, possibly alerting you of any fraud on your credit report. Credit JourneySM also has a unique score simulator that shows you how your score may be affected by certain actions like paying off debt and opening new accounts.

Refer a friend

If you’re a cardmember for select Chase cards, you can refer a friend and be rewarded. The rewards you earn vary based on card, and can include points, cash back, miles and more. This is a great way to increase your rewards. Note there is a cap on the amount of rewards you can earn each year.
