Landmark Credit Union’s checking account options

VIP Checking

Despite its name, VIP Checking is Landmark’s most basic, no-frills account. But it still pays interest on some balances and carries no monthly maintenance fee.
APYMinimum Balance to Earn APY
0.10%
$2,500
  • Minimum opening deposit: $35
  • Monthly account maintenance fee: $0
  • ATM fee: $0; $2 after 12 ATM withdrawals per month
  • ATM fee refund: none
  • Overdraft fee: $30; $5 with overdraft protection

Landmark Credit Union’s VIP checking has no minimum maintenance balance after the $35 opening deposit, but dividends are not paid until the account balance reaches at least $2,500.

Some common checking account features are included with the account — this includes free online banking, free e-statements, and a free Visa debit card. Users are charged a $3 monthly fee for Bill Pay; however, this fee can be waived with a direct deposit of $250 or more. Bill Pay users will receive their first 15 payments paid for free and will be charged $0.49 for each subsequent bill payment.

The credit union’s ClickSWITCH service allows customers to easily switch direct deposits from old accounts to a new Landmark Credit Union checking account. With a few mouse clicks, the service will notify auto-debit payees of the new Landmark account information, close other accounts and track the progress of the account switch on the credit union’s website.

Rewards Checking

Rewards Checking carries the same benefits of the credit union’s VIP Checking account, but it pays reward points rather than dividends.
  • Minimum opening deposit: $35
  • Monthly account maintenance fee: $0
  • ATM fee: $0; $2 after 12 ATM withdrawals per month
  • ATM fee refund: none
  • Overdraft fee: $30; $5 with overdraft protection

With the Rewards Checking account, customers earn one reward point for every $2 they spend on a signature-based purchase — a signature-based purchase occurs when you make a credit purchase using your debit card. To help customers build up points faster, the credit union allows members to pool points from other Landmark cards using a household account.

Users are charged a $3 monthly fee for Bill Pay; however, this fee can be waived with a direct deposit of $250 or more. Bill Pay users will receive their first 15 payments paid for free and will be charged $0.49 for each subsequent bill payment.

Customers are required to enroll in e-statements with Landmark Credit Union’s Premium Checking account. However, when paired with a monthly direct deposit of at least $250, customers qualify for a huge APY boost on the first $500 of their account balances. Even with the interest rate premium, there is no monthly fee charged on this account.

Beyond the additional interest, this checking account has the same features found on other Landmark Credit Union checking accounts, including free online banking and access to bill pay features. Users are charged a $3 monthly fee for Bill Pay; however, this fee can be waived with a direct deposit of $250 or more. Bill Pay users will receive their first 15 payments paid for free and will be charged $0.49 for each subsequent bill payment.

How to get Landmark Credit Union’s checking accounts

All of Landmark Credit Union’s checking accounts can be opened online. On the credit union’s website, there is an “open account” button next to each account’s description that will take you to the general application used for all accounts that can be opened online.

Once there, you’ll need a government-issued ID (e.g. a driver’s license) and a Social Security number or Individual Tax Identification number. You’ll also need a funding source for your new checking account, which can be anything from a credit or debit card to a checking or savings account number. You can also visit one of the credit union’s branches to open an account.

How Landmark Credit Union’s checking accounts compare

Landmark Credit Union offers three types of checking accounts, and they have different target audiences. The Rewards Checking account might appeal to customers wishing to earn rewards rather than interest, while the VIP Checking account is the type of basic account with no monthly fee that could appeal to a different crowd; however, the interest paid is low.

Customers seeking the highest yields will find an off-the-chart APY on the Premium Checking account, which currently pays a rate far above even the best available national checking account rates — the catch is that the rate only applies to the first $500 on deposit.

The VIP Savings account is the point of entry to Landmark Credit Union membership. It requires $5 to open and has no monthly service fees. Interest is earned on balance of at least $25, with the same flat APY paid to all qualifying balances.

Up to 12 ATM fee-free withdrawals are allowed per month, with additional transactions costing $2 each. There is no overdraft protection on Landmark savings accounts as there is with the bank’s checking accounts. As a savings account, you’ll have a regulatory transaction limit each month. Additionally, transactions in excess of six per statement cycle are assessed an excess activity fee of $10 per transaction.

“You-Name-It” savings accounts at Landmark Credit Union are simply secondary savings accounts, opened after the required membership savings account. The “You-Name-It” moniker comes from the fact that customers are allowed to assign any name they like to the account, such as “Vacation” or “Emergency Fund.” Beyond its name, the “You-Name-It” account is identical to the VIP Savings account, with a small required opening deposit, no monthly maintenance fee, and a $30 overdraft fee.

However, withdrawals can be made from a branch even before the regular payout date, June 1 for Vacation Club accounts and October 1 for Christmas Club accounts. Withdrawals or transfers made within the first seven days after the account is open are assessed a fee of $8.

Landmark Credit Union’s HSA operates just like a checking account: withdrawals from the HSA are not subject to the excess withdrawal fee that hits transactions exceeding six per month regulatory limit on savings and money market accounts. However, as a tax-advantaged account, withdrawals are limited by the IRS restrictions that apply to all HSAs. In a nutshell, withdrawals are generally tax-free if used for qualifying expenses like dental or vision care, or other medical expenses. As of 2018, contributions limits for HSAs are $3,450 for individuals and $6,900 for families.

How to get Landmark Credit Union’s savings accounts

Landmark Credit Union allows customers to open VIP and You-Name-It savings accounts online, via the same application process that’s used for checking accounts. Opening Christmas Club, Vacation Club, and Health Savings accounts require a visit to a branch; customers can also call the credit union’s support line at (800) 871-2110.

How Landmark Credit Union’s savings accounts compare

Landmark offers a wide range of savings accounts, but there’s not much to distinguish them. The credit union’s two traditional savings accounts, VIP Savings and You-Name-It Savings, are two versions of the same account, with low minimums and no monthly fee.

The single-tier interest rate is below the national average, and nowhere near the best rates you can find from other available savings accounts. The Christmas and Vacation Club accounts are specialty accounts that help savers earn money towards an annual goal, but the rates are the same as with the credit union’s VIP and You-Name-It accounts. You can earn an above-average APY on the credit union’s Health Savings Account, but the account carries the same restrictions as other HSAs in terms of tax-free withdrawals.

Minimums on Landmark’s CDs vary based on whether the account is opened by a student or a non-student. Dividends are compounded monthly and paid monthly, or at maturity if the crediting date arrives before month-end. Additional deposits are not allowed after the purchase of a specific CD. Certificates automatically renew at maturity, although a 10-day grace period applies after the maturity date. Withdrawals taken at any other time are assessed an early withdrawal penalty based on the length to maturity of the original CD.

Landmark Credit Union’s “Special” CD maturities offer a great value compared with the credit union’s regular CDs. Rates are much higher than comparable maturities in the standard CD line, with the same minimums, penalties, and other terms. Just like the Landmark Credit Union’s regular CDs, special CDs are automatically renewable but have a 10-day grace period after maturity during which penalty-free withdrawals may be taken.

How to get Landmark Credit Union’s CD accounts

You can open a Landmark Credit Union CD online, just as you can with most checking and savings accounts at the credit union. The account-opening process is the same, requiring photo identification and a Social Security number or Individual Tax Identification Number, along with a funding source. Those that prefer can also open a CD account by visiting a branch.

How Landmark Credit Union’s CD accounts compare

Most of Landmark’s CDs are below the national averages for CD rates — however, one exception is the five-year CD rate, which handily tops the national average. For those seeking the best yields, the credit union’s special CDs are the way to go, as each of the three maturities easily beats the national average and competes even with the best CD rates available across the nation. Landmark allows a fairly generous 10-day grace period before its CDs renew, allowing customers extra time to take a withdrawal if need be.

Landmark Credit Union’s VIP Money Market account offers a tiered interest rate structure. However, customers who can put up the minimum $2,400 to open the account benefit from being in the highest interest-rate tier. Deposits that fall below this amount trigger the monthly maintenance fee, and also receive just a fraction of the interest paid on higher balances.

Certain account withdrawals are allowed up to six per month, in accordance with federal Regulation D; excess withdrawals trigger a $10 fee per event.

The Money Market Index Plus account requires a much higher opening deposit of $10,000, with the same balance required to avoid the $10 monthly maintenance fee.

Depositors at that level receive more than four times the interest that is paid on smaller balances. Reg D limitations apply to this account as well, meaning certain transactions in excess of six per month get hit with a $10-per-transaction fee.

Landmark Credit Union’s newest money market account makes a splash by paying out an excellent APY on larger deposits. Small amounts don’t earn much with the Signature Money Market account, but balances of $50,000 or more earn more than 17 times as much on an annual basis. Dividends are earned at the highest rate for the entire balance once the qualifying threshold has been reached.

The account comes with a monthly fee, but it can be avoided by just making the minimum deposit required to open the account. As a money market account, certain types of withdrawals are allowed up to six per month, in accordance with federal Regulation D. Excess withdrawals are assessed a $10 fee.

How to get Landmark Credit Union’s money market accounts

The same application process applies to all Landmark CU accounts that can be opened online. To get through the process, you’ll need a Social Security number or Individual Tax Identification Number (ITIN), a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license or military ID, and a funding source for your new account, such as a credit/debit card or bank account number.

As with its non-IRA CDs, dividends are compounded and paid monthly or at maturity. No new funds can be added to a CD after the initial purchase. How Landmark Credit Union’s IRA accounts compare

Landmark Credit Union brings a quite extensive product line to its IRA accounts, with a regular savings account, two types of CDs, and three types of money market accounts available. Most of these accounts carry the same rates as in the credit union’s non-IRA versions.

The IRA savings account pays a modest amount of interest, but the money market accounts hit or exceed national averages in terms of APY, just like the standard versions available outside of an IRA. Standard CD rates are below-average, except for the five-year maturity. Top rates are available with the credit union’s Special CD maturities, which are competitive with the best available IRA CD rates, and with deposits above $50,000 in Landmark’s Signature Money Market (IRA).

Overall review of Landmark Credit Union’s banking products

Landmark Credit Union stumbles a bit when it comes to the rates it pays on its savings accounts. However, beyond that, customers would be hard-pressed to find better rates on a national level for many of Landmark’s products. The credit union’s CD and IRA CD rates are among the best available, and the Signature Money Market rate, for deposits of $50,000 and above, is also hard to beat. The credit union’s most noteworthy account is its Premium Checking account, offering an astronomical APY starting from the first dollar. Although the sky-high rate is only for deposits up to $500, it can be a huge boost for beginning savers or those with small amounts to set aside.

Overall, Landmark has a diversified portfolio of accounts that can pay outstanding rates if customers take the time to pick and choose.
