A balance transfer is a great way to reduce your interest expense. You can use that savings to put extra money into your pocket, or to pay off your debt much more quickly.

You can use this card to transfer debt from another bank. You can not use this card to transfer debt from another card from this bank.

All balance transfers follow a similar pattern. Typically there is a fee (as a % of the balance) and a promotional interest rate. This card has a fee of 3%, and a promotional interest rate of 0% that lasts for months.

To understand if the balance transfer offer makes sense, you need to consider your existing credit card interest rate and the amount of money you can afford to pay each month. To see how much you could save, and to see if this is the best offer for you, you can input your data into our Balance Transfer calculator.

Balance Transfers are the best way to reduce debt, but you need to beware the fine print.

Overview

Huntington has created an interesting credit card.

At its core, this is a basic card.  You earn 3X points in one of 10 categories (capped at $2,000 each quarter or 6000 points), and all other purchases earn 1X points. There is a $0 annual fee.

But, every quarter you have the ability to choose your own category where you can earn 3%.  So, if you know you are going to spend a lot at Wal-Mart, you can actually choose the category “Wal-Mart” for your 3% rate.  Or, if you are going to do a summer road trip, you can sign up for gas.

The bonus is limited to $2,000 of spend per quarter.

So, when you compare to Chase Freedom® or Discover it® Cash Back: you can earn cash back on $2,000 of spend (rather than $1,500), and you can choose your own category.  But, you earn 3% instead of 5%.

We like the choice.  But you have to run the numbers to see if this is a bit too gimmicky for you.

Overview

  • This card has no annual fee.
  • The balance transfer offer is a 4% fee and 0% interest rate for the first twelve months.
  • Technically this a decent way to reduce the interest rate on your debt for 12 months.  However, at MagnifyMoney we believe that balance transfers are best used when it will take you longer to pay off your debt.  Your savings would be minimal - and you will have an inquiry on your credit bureau.  (If it is going to take you 9+ months to pay off your debt, then the savings really start to add up - and it is definitely worth the credit bureau inquiry).
  • The interest rates on this card range from 15.25% - 20.25% - which is all much lower than the industry averages.
  • This card is really targeted to existing customers of First Tennessee.  If you aren't an existing customer, you will likely need to go to a branch.

With this card, you earn M&T bank rewards points that can later be redeemed.

There is no annual fee, and you earn 1 point for every $1 you spend.

There is a bonus offer of 10,000 points if you spend $500 in the first 3 months.

To view the redemption options, you can visit rewards.mtb.com

To understand the value of an M&T point, we looked at Cash Back options.  For lower redemptions (which start at 3,000 points for $25), you receive your cash back on a pre-paid card.

For higher redemptions (10,000 points for $100 cash back), you can receive the cash as a statement credit.

In both options, the actual cash back rate of return that you are receiving is terrible.  For the $25 reward, you are getting a 0.8% cash back rate.  For the 10,000 – you are receiving 0.9%.

The Fifth Third Cash Rewards MasterCard offers the opportunity to earn 1% cashback, with a 2% bonus in certain categories.  There is no annual fee, and no limit to the total cashback that can be earned per year.

The 2% cashback can be earned:

  • On gas and grocery store purchases
  • Subject to $1,500 maximum spend per quarter

The minimum redemption is $50.

We believe that everyone should be able to receive at least 1.5% of cashback, with no annual fee.  Depending upon how much you spend, this could happen on this card.

However, given the limitations – both category and spending caps – it may be difficult and you will likely find better value elsewhere.

Overview

Fifth Third bank has its own rewards currency, called Real Life Rewards.  There are different ways to earn Real Life Rewards points (including bank accounts and credit cards).  You can combine the points.

This card does 2 things:

  • It lets you earn rewards (1 point for every $1 spent)
  • FifthThird will contribute to Stand up to Cancer based upon your usage
    • $5 for every open credit card, and
    • 0.2% of every purchase
    • FifthThird promised at least $400,000 in the year through this program

There is no cap on the number of points that you can earn.

You can then redeem the points your earn at the Fifth Third redemption portal.

As a general rule: if the redemption portal does not disclose how many points are required for rewards until after you have applied for the card, then you probably are not getting a great deal!  This card is no different.  You can browse the catalog, but unless you have the card – you won’t be able to see how many points the rewards cost.

In this set-up, it is highly likely that the banks will regularly tweak and change the redemption value.

At the time of this review, you could get $10 of cash back for 2,500 points; $25 = 5,000; $50 = 8,000; $100 = 15,000; $250 = 30,000; $500 = 55,000.

A good rewards program gives you $1 of value for every 100 points you earn.  You can’t find that value here!

We like that you can earn double points on gas and grocery.  But when you look at the effective cash back rate on $100 of cash back:

  • For spend earning 1 point (all other), you will get a return of only 0.67%!

If you are only looking at this through the lense of your own rewards, this is not market-leading.  But, if you want to support Stand up to Cancer (a great cause), then both you (with your Real Life Rewards) and Stand up to Cancer (with the contributions from Fifth Third) both get good nice returns.

Overview

With this card, you earn 1 point for every $1 you spend.  You also earn 3 points for every $1 of interest you pay (we really don't like this).

Once you accumulate 5,000 points, you can redeem those points for $25 of cash back.

For your everyday spend, that means you will get 0.5% cash back.  You should be getting at least 1.5% - and we think you could do a lot better elsewhere.

We really don't like the 3 points for the interest.  That means you will effectively get 2 cents back for every $1 of interest you pay.  If they were serious about lowering the cost of borrowing, they should just reduce the interest rate.

First, the good news.  There is no annual fee on this card.

Now, the bad news.  You earn 1.5% cash back on every $1 you spend.

Even worse - they will give you 5 points for every $1 of interest you pay.  We really don't like rewards for going into debt. They should just reduce the interest rate.  And the actual value is pretty miserable.  For every $1 of interest, they are effectively reducing your cost by 2.5 cents.  How generous.

We think everyone should earn at least 1.5% cash back on their spend.  You can do better elsewhere.

And if you are looking for low-cost borrowing options, there are better cards (or personal loans) out there.

With this card, you earn 1 point for every $1 you spend.  In addition (and we really do not like this), you earn 3 points for every $1 in interest that you are charged.

Once you have 5,000 points, you can redeem for $25.

That means every $1 in spend gives you 0.5% cash back.

Even worse, 3 points for every $1 of interest you spend means that you get a 2 cent refund on your interest.  Not worth it.
