If you’re just starting the process of searching for a financial advisor in Portland, you may be feeling overwhelmed by the number of choices in Oregon’s most-populated city. Much like picking which book to buy at Powell’s Books, choosing a financial advisor largely comes down to your personal preferences and needs. Before you start your search, you’ll want to identify what those are, as well as how much you can comfortably spend on an advisor’s services.

From there, you’ll need to compare your options. We understand that looking through firms and data points can seem daunting though, so we have gone ahead and compiled the most pertinent information on Portland’s best financial advisors. To determine the top advisors in Portland, we looked exclusively at firms that manage individual accounts and offer financial planning services. We then ranked these firms based on assets under management (AUM), which serves as a general metric for a firm’s size. Although not formally part of our ranking, we encourage readers to take note of each firm’s client-to-advisor ratio, as this indicates how much attention you may get as a client. All data used in our methodology is taken from each firm’s most recent Form ADV filing with the SEC so as to ensure the accuracy and reliability of our rankings.

Although our ranking won’t tell you which firm will suit you best, it can help simplify your decision-making process. Check out our list below for the top firms in Portland and their main highlights:

8 best financial advisors in Portland

Methodology and criteria

For our search, we looked at firms across the city of Portland. All of the firms considered are bound by fiduciary duty, registered with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and offer individual account management and financial planning services. Information used for our methodology criteria is taken directly from each firm’s most recent Form ADV filing and brochure, found on the IAPD database.

To localize our results for this list, we exclusively looked at firms that met the above criteria and had their headquarters in Portland, as per the address provided in the Form ADV. Of those firms, we only considered those that offer financial planning services and portfolio management to individual investors. To be considered for this list, firms also could have no more than one disciplinary disclosure in the past 10 years. From there, the remaining firms that met all of the above stipulations were ranked in order of highest to lowest AUM, as this is an indication of a firm’s size and how many assets it has been entrusted to manage.

In our reviews, we have also listed several other key features that will help you determine which financial advisor may be most fitting for your investing style and financial needs. While our ranking system and methodology is designed to help you compare firms, it does not indicate which firm may be best for you. All information here is accurate as of February 8, 2021, but we urge you to also evaluate these firms on

Financial advisors in Portland: FAQ

Residents of the Portland metro area with an individual taxable income of $200,000 for joint filers or $125,000 for single filers are subject to a 1% tax starting in 2021. The state of Oregon also levies a progressive personal income tax on residents that ranges from 5% to 9.90%.

Oregon does have a state estate tax for estates of $1 million or more, with the rate ranging from 10% to 16%. Federal estate taxes may also apply depending on the size of the estate.

While many financial advisors focus their businesses around retirement planning and the needs of retirees, not all do. Instead, some firms specialize in serving the needs of the ultrawealthy, or in serving a specific demographic, like physicians. Others may be more focused on providing investment advice rather than financial planning-related services, such as planning ahead for retirement. As such, if retirement planning is a priority for you, then you will want to search for an advisor that focuses in this area and confirm their experience in providing this service.

A fiduciary financial advisor is legally and ethically bound to act in their client’s best interest at all times. Financial advisors who are not fiduciaries are simply bound by the suitability standard, which only requires that they make recommendations that are suitable for their client — not necessarily what is best. This may introduce potential conflicts of interest, as advisors can make recommendations and sell products that put their bottom line ahead of clients’ best interests.

Financial advisors generally make money from the fees they charge clients, though they can also earn compensation through commissions from the sale or recommendation of financial products or based on portfolio performance. Advisors may charge clients based on a percentage of their assets under management (how much money is invested by the financial advisor on the client’s behalf), or they can charge clients an hourly rate or a fixed fee for their services. Learn more about the types of fees an advisor may charge — as well as how much these fees typically run — by reading this article on the cost of a financial advisor.

The “Find a Financial Advisor” links contained in this article will direct you to webpages devoted to MagnifyMoney Advisor (“MMA”). After completing a brief questionnaire, you will be matched with certain financial advisers who participate in MMA’s referral program, which may or may not include the investment advisers discussed.
